High Valley Cemetery

LOCATION:

The High Valley Cemetery is located in Southeast San Saba County in the Chappel Community. The cemetery is located at the junction of FM 501 and CR 432, about 17 miles from the city of San Saba.

DIRECTIONS:

• From the San Saba city limit go east on U. S. Highway 190 for 2.9 miles to FM 580 (Bend Road).

• Turn right onto FM 580 and go southeast 12 miles to junction with FM 501.

• Turn right onto FM 501 and go 0.7 mile to the east junction with CR 432. (The High Valley cemetery and High Valley Baptist church are at this junction.)

• To enter the cemetery visitors should turn left onto CR 432 and drive to a walk-through gate which is near mid-point in the east fence line of the cemetery.


Note: The gate to the church-cemetery parking area which opens onto FM 501 is pad-locked.

CONDITION:

The High Valley Cemetery was established in the early 1870’s and is still in use as a burial ground in 2010. The cemetery is located on land given by the David Matsler family who were the first permanent white settlers to the area in 1854.

The Cemetery is an area of about 1 ¼ acres, enclosed by a 4 ft. high chain-link fence. There are four gates opening into the cemetery. The main entrance from the church/cemetery parking area is a 12 foot wide gate at near mid-point in the west fence line. There is another 12 ft. wide gate in the west fence line at the northwest corner of the cemetery. There is a third 12 ft. wide gate at the northeast corner of the cemetery in the diagonal fence. A 3 ft. wide walk-through gate at near mid-point in the east fence line opens onto CR 432.
