1 . According to Crawford family tradition (compiled by editor Carlene Peacock Brown
in 1991) this old cemetery was located in a grove of trees at the confluence of Brown's Branch and the San Saba River so that marauding Indians could not easily find and defile it. However, due to flooding and resulting erosion, the cemetery was eventually abandoned.
Those known to have been buried there were of the Crawford, Wayland, Harris and Magee families. Of these people four Crawford bodies were later moved to the nearby Harris cemetery. Only the tombstone of James L. Crawford remained in the cemetery at the time the bodies
were removed. Others had probably been carried away by floodwaters. New tombstones have been provided in the Harris Cemetery for the Crawford graves.

2. James Lesley Crawford was born in Waxhaw, Lancaster County, South Carolina. He was the son of James Crawford, Jr. and Christiana (White) Crawford. His grandparents were James Crawford, Sr. and Jannet (Hutchenson) Crawford. Jannet Hutchenson was sister to Elizabeth (Hutchenson) Jackson, mother of President Andrew Jackson. Thus, James L. Crawford was a cousin to the seventh president of the United States.
James Lesley Crawford married Berthena Owens august 22, 1815, in Maury County, Tennessee. James L. Crawford died on Feb. 4, 1868, and was buried in the Crawford Cemetery. His body and tombstone were later moved to the Harris Cemetery.

3. Berthena (Owens) Crawford was the wife of James L. Crawford. She was born in 1800 in Georgia, the daughter of Thomas Owens. James Lesley and Berthena were the parents of ten children, seven sons and three daughters. All these children were born in Tennessee with the exception of one daughter, Eliza Jane, who was born in Illinois. Berthena died in 1887 and was buried in the Crawford Cemetery. Her body (no tombstone) was later moved to the Harris Cemetery.

4. William White Crawford, born in 1820 was the son of James Lesley Crawford and Berthena Owens. He came to Texas and lived with his mother and father. He was never married. He was a Pvt. in theTexas State Troops of the Confederate States Army. He died in 1875 and was buried beside the grave of his father in the Crawford Cemetery. His body (no tombstone) was later moved to the Harris Cemetery.

5. James H. Crawford, born in 1831, was the son of James Lesley Crawford and Berthena Owens. He came to Texas with his mother and father. He was never married. He served in Co. G, Madison Texas Regiment of the Confederates States Army. He died in 1901 in San Saba County, Texas, and was buried in the Crawford Family
Cemetery. His body (no tombstone) was later moved to the Harris Cemetery.
