Kuykendall Cemetery

FOOTNOTES:

1.         Kuykendall, William Johnson was born February 14, 1829, in Tennessee, the son of James Kuykendall and Dorcas Reynolds.  The Kuykendall family moved from Tennessee to Texas in 1848 and settled in Rusk County.  In 1856 W. J. and his brother, Matthew, moved to San Saba County and made their home on the upper Cherokee Creek.  W. J. married Elizabeth Jane Coffman.  Seven children were born to this union: (1) L. C.; (2) J. L.; (3) A.R.; (4) Matthew; (5) Elizabeth Jane (Mrs. J.E.G. Hillman); (6) Amanda; and (7) Annie (Mrs. Perry Cook).

2.         Coffman, Jacob Marion was born Feb. 14, 1837, in Madison County, Alabama, to James Coffman and Elizabeth Robertson.  He married Louisa Carolinea Clayton.  They came to San Saba County in 1877 and settled near his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Kuykendall.  He died March 7, 1884.  At his death Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Kuykendall gave land for a family cemetery.  He was the first person buried in what is now known as the Kuykendall Cemetery.  (For more on the Coffman family, see pp. 59-60, Vol. I, San Saba County History 1856-1983.)

3.         The Woodward Family:  L. B. (Pap) Woodward and Jamima Ann (Jester) Woodward were among the first to come to the Cherokee Creek area in the early 1850’s before San Saba was established as a county.

            Lewellen Bainbridge Woodward was born May 4, 1817, in Warren County, Georgia.  Jamima Ann was born in 1826 in Tennessee. According to Woodward family history, L. B. Woodward was a signatory of a petition dated Nov. 8, 1855, to the Texas Legislature requesting formation of San Saba County.

            Jamima Ann died March 13, 1896, and L. B. Sr. died August 7, 1896. They are buried in the Kuykendall Cemetery where an enclosure of native stone has been constructed around their grave markers.  (For more on the Woodward family see pages 194 and 195 in Vol. II of San Saba County History 1856-2001.)

4.         The William M. Whitt Family: William McGuire Whitt was born January 19, 1846, in Tazewell County, Virginia, to John F. Whitt and Elizabeth Bruster. He married Mary Eveline Altizer on Dec. 27, 1865.  In December 1882, the William Whitt’s and his father’s family, the John F. Whitt’s, moved to San Saba County and after awhile settled on land that W. M. had purchased south of Cherokee.  William’s father, John Floyd, died on Feb. 14, 1885, soon after moving to San Saba County.  His mother died fifteen years later on March 12, 1900. Both are buried in the Kuykendall Cemetery.

            Eveline died Sept. 18, 1900.  She is buried in the Kuykendall Cemetery.  After her death W. M. married Mrs. Emma Dean on Dec. 22, 1902.  William McGuire Whitt died Feb. 11, 1931, and is buried beside Eveline in the Kuykendall Cemetery.  (For more on the Whitt family see pages 185-189, Vol. II of San Saba County History 1856-2001.)

5.         Hiilsmeier, Herman was born in Germany and came to the United States in the 1880’s.  After a brief stay in Chicago, he moved to Texas in 1882 and was employed as a ranch hand by George Gray.  He married Mary Koenig in Cherokee.  They had eight children: John, Will, Rosie, Ed, Nora and three others who died as infants.  Mary died Sept. 16, 1905.

            Herman married Albertina (spelled Alberthiene on her tombstone) Poehler in 1911 and to this union two children were born, Albert and Alma (Mrs. Settemeyer).

            Herman Hiilsmeier died May 5, 1939, and Albertina died Feb. 2, 1959.  They are buried in the Kuykendall Cemetery.  (For more on the Herman Hiilsmeier family see pages 148, Vol. I of San Saba County History 1856-1983.)

6.         The Fishback Family: LaSalle E. Fishback was born and reared in Titus County in East Texas.  He married Minnie May Petty January 9, 1904.  They moved to San Saba County in 1906 and after moving from place to place east and west of Cherokee, they finally settled into ranching in the Rough Creek community.  They had two children, a daughter, Ellon, born in 1906, and a son, William A., born in 1921.  L. E. and Minnie bought a home in San Saba in 1947 where they lived for the remainder of their lives.  The family still owns the ranch on Rough Creek.
