1. John Samuel May (1839-1915) was born in Virginia to James Samuel May and Mrs. J. S. (Poindexter) May. He was the first of the May family to come to Texas. He married Fannie Lee Newcomb in 1879 or 1880. According to the 1900 census for Precinct 3 of San Saba County, John S. May and Fannie Lee Newcomb had been married twenty years and had nine children, all living. Census records for 1910 show a tenth child was born in 1901.
2. Children of John Samuel May and Fannie Lee Newcomb were:
(1) Paul E. May, born in Texas in February 1880. He never married and lived in Graham County, Arizona.
(2) Eula L. May, born in Texas in January 1882. She married G. W. Walker on Feb. 6, 1908. Eula and G. W. lived in Travis County, Texas.
(3) James A. May was born in Texas at Salt Branch near Cherokee in 1884. He married Rosa Cummings in 1903. The 1920 census for Precinct No. 3 of San Saba County, along with birth records and death records in the San Saba County Clerk’s Office name the children born to this union up to 1911. They were (1) Cleo Beatrice, born Oct. 15, 1904, (2) Rosa Lane, born Oct. 12, 1906; (3) Jewel Alice who lived ten months and died Aug. 25, 1907, (4) Leona, born in 1908 or 1909, and Tiny Estalee, born Dec. 12, 1910. All these children were born at Salt Branch near Cherokee with Dr. C. L. Behrens attending.
(4) John Samuel May, Jr. was born in San Saba County in October, 1886. He never married. He lived in San Saba County.
(5) Carrie V. May was born in San Saba County in August 1888. She married M. K. Hamner on October 5, 1913. They lived in Hidalgo County, Texas.
(6) Walter W. May was born in San Saba County on January 5, 1891. There is no record of a marriage available. However, birth records in the San Saba County Clerk’s Office indicate that a child, Mona Odessa May, was born on Jan. 12, 1916 to Walter May and Elsie Caldora (McCurdy) May. Walter May died on June 13, 1966, and was buried in the Hanna Cemetery at Cherokee. Elsie Caldora May was born Dec. 22, 1898, and died Jan. 20, 1979. She was buried in the Hanna Cemetery.
(7) Bessie F. May was born in San Saba County, Texas, in February 1893. She married E. L. Edwards June 13, 1915. They lived in San Saba County.
(8) Willie May was born in San Saba County, Texas, in June 1895. She married William Collister on April 23, 1918. They lived in Bernalille County, New Mexico.
(9) Charles Hobson May was born in San Saba County, Texas, August 14, 1898. He died October 23, 1905. He is buried in the May Cemetery in the Salt Branch community.
(10) Vernon Allen May was born in San Saba County, Texas on February 25, 1901. He married Zeola Smith in 1923. They had three children: Allen, Wanda and Kenneth.
3. The May family farm and ranch in the Salt Branch Community.
John Samuel May purchased land in the Salt Branch Community of San Saba County in 1882 from Mary A. Mavrick. That land transaction is recorded in the Deed Records of San Saba County in Volume K, page 436. It is on this land that the May Cemetery is located. The J. S. May family heirs sold that same tract of land in 1928 to H. B. Parisher. This land transaction is recorded in the Deed Records of San Saba County in Volume 90, pages 63-65, and is more particularly described in the Exhibit Section of this report.
