Sloan (Henderson) Cemetery

Inscriptions:
• Names are by row starting in the southwest comer and listing from left to right along the west fence line for Row #1.

• Rows #3, 4 and 5 continue through the Sloan grave plot. The Sloan grave plot is divided into three sections separated and/or outlined by concrete, stone and iron fencing. Not all of Sloan graves are in the Sloan plot.

• Row #5 begins with three graves in the Hardman plot that is bordered by concrete curbing.

Footnotes:

1. In Row #1 for gravesite #(3): The concrete marker with no name or dates is located beside the grave of Elvira M. Mace. Old cemetery records indicate that Darrel O. Mace is buried in the Sloan Cemetery. The concrete marker beside the grave of Elvira Mace is probably the marker for Darrel O. Mace, born May 2. 1906 and died November 17, 1969.

2. In Row#3 graves (11) and (12): James and Martha Henderson were among the early arrivers to the Texas frontier. They settled on land along the San Saba River in the Rock Shoals area. They helped in the building of the Sloan community during the time when the area was still occupied by Indians. James Henderson was the first to be buried in the Sloan Cemetery, first known as the Henderson Cemetery.

3. In Row #5 tombstones (10) and (11) were moved to the Sloan Cemetery from another location. The original burial site for Nancy H. Sloan who died in 1856 and Allen Sloan who died in 1857 was located in a pasture and had been abandoned as a cemetery and was in an advanced state of decay.
